Joyce Gay Gunn

Joyce Gay Gunn. 83, of Millen, GA. our precious mama, grandma, and wife, took the hand of Jesus on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Ogeechee Hospice in Statesboro. She was born July 5, 1934 at her homeplace in Jenkins County, the daughter of Willie E. and Vinnie Lawrence Gay. In 1954 Joyce married William Gunn, the love of her life, to whom she was devoted for 63 years. They had three wonderful children, Robert, Lucy, and Jeff. She was the epitome of the Proverbs 31 wife and mother who always placed everyone else’s needs before her own. Along with her own family, she helped nurture countless others who still call her “Mama”. Joyce worked at Jockey International for many years managing the cafeteria and using the talent God gave her for cooking. She was the best cook “ever”, and her banana pudding was famous. The most important thing in her life was her love of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for whom she tirelessly served at Millen Baptist Church as Sunday School teacher and Wednesday night cook. She was preceded in death by her son, Jeff, and four brothers and three sisters, J. W. Gay, Ed Gay, Earl Gay, Willie E. Gay, Veda Cowart, Jimmie Ruth Gay and Lynne Newman. Funeral services were Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary of Millen Baptist Church with Revs. Cliff Morris and Brad Asbury officiating. The family received friends at the Millen Baptist Church Social Hall starting at 10 a. m. A private interment took place after the service at Millen Cemetery. Active Pallbearers were Uncle Brook Bowers, Tim Fields, Robert Oglesby, Stewart Rackley, Tommy Taylor, and Dave Waters. Survivors include her husband, William Gunn, a son, Robert Gunn (Teresa), and daughter, Lucy Bowers Boykin (Patrick), all of the Millen area. A daughter-in-law, Denise Gunn Obringer of St. Simons Island. Five grandchildren, Will Bowers (Brooke), Rebekah Wasden (George), of Millen, Nathan Brown (Ashley) of Statesboro, Gabbi Gunn of Brunswick and Robert Paul Gunn of St. Simons Island. Seven great grandchildren, Mark Thomas Wasden, Williams Ray Wasden, Lane Bowers, Layla Bowers, Clayton Owens, Dustin Brown, and Mallory Kate Brown. Also a host of dearly loved nieces and nephews and in-laws, special friends and caregivers, Rosa B. Smith, Elaine Brannen, Stanley Thompson, and Railroad Gun and Pawn. Good night, We love you (me uh you), Sweet dreams, Good Luck, See you in the Morning!
