County’s Unemployment Rate rises slightly

More Jenkins Countians were unemployed during the month of July this year than in June, according to statistics provided by the Georgia Department of Labor.

The county’s unemployment rate for July was 7.9% with 256 persons listed as unemployed. For June, the unemployment rate was 7.6% with 244 local citizens unemployed. The local workforce also increased from 3,224 in June to 3,238 in July.

Wheeler County held the highest unemployment rate in the state in July at 10.0% with Clay County coming in second with a rate of 9.8%. The lowest rate was held by Oconee County at 3.9%.

The unemployment rates of surrounding counties for the month of July were: Bulloch, 5.8%; Burke, 8.0%; Candler, 4.8%, Emanuel, 7.6% and Screven, 6.9%.

The national unemployment rate rose slightly from 4.5% in June to 4.6% in July. The state’s rate held steady at 5.1% for the months of June and July.
