The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

Patients at the Millen Dialysis Center were told last week that the center will be closing, effective Oct. 31. The news is devastating for most that will now have to travel to out-of-town dialysis centers for treatment three times a week. This decision hits home for us as my husband, Wayne, has been a dialysis patient at the center for nine years now.

I know from his experience that most dialysis patients don’t feel like walking to their vehicles after treatments, let alone having to drive home from an out-of-town center. Also, some of those receiving treatment rely upon family members to drive them or take the Jenkins County Transit unit to and from the dialysis center. The transit unit does not take patients to out-of-town medical destinations.

The reason cited for closure was a “decrease in patient census”, meaning not enough patients are being treated to make the center a profitable venture. I understand the need to make a profit in order to stay in business, but that does not lighten the blow to those who will endure an added hardship in what is already a difficult situation.

I am hoping, and praying, that another operator will take over the Millen Dialysis Center before Oct. 31st, but it doesn’t appear that will happen. The facility has already changed hands several times through the years. Please add your prayers to mine.
