Patients were given the news as they arrived on Sept. 20th that they would need to seek treatment in neighboring communities.

In a letter to patients, AmericanRenal cited “continued declining census as well as availability of community dialysis providers to accommodate your (patient) needs” as the reasons for the closure of the facility. The clinic currently runs three shifts of approximately 10 patients on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Neighboring dialysis clinics typically run three shifts of 10 patients six days a week.

Some of those being treated at the local dialysis clinic depend upon the Jenkins County Transit van for transportation to and from the facility. Currently, the county does not provide transportation to out of town medical facilities.

County Administrator Grady Saxon said, “I anticipate receiving a letter from the dialysis clinic. We will review it then. Currently, there are several out-of-town transit services that serve Millen. Our transit system only operates one van, and it may pose difficulties if we have to transport out of the county. There are many ‘unknowns’ at this point.”

The Millen Dialysis Clinic has been operating for approximately 18 years. It has changed ownerships several times.
