The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

It’s that time of the year again – the holiday season. It is also the time of the year when thefts and robberies increase.

The newspaper has already had one report of a package delivery being stolen from the front porch of a home in the City of Millen. However, the story has a “happy” ending. Apparently, the contents of the package did not “fit” the thief, so the rewrapped package was returned to the porch a few days later.

Stealing packages from the porches of residences is a common practice, especially during the holiday season. But, most instances do not have “happy” instances. So, take care this holiday season to protect your home deliveries.

Of course, it is not always possible to be home when a delivery is made. But you can take precautions. Here are some suggestions. Have the packages delivered to your workplace, someone who is home or a local ‘hub’. Require the carrier to get a signature upon delivery. Reschedule a delivery for a time when you are at home. Install a security camera at your front door or leave your dog out to patrol. Insure your upcoming packages against theft. Place security signs and decals in view on your premises.

Unfortunately, thieves are determined and ingenious in their attempts to steal. So, we all should be prepared to do what we can to deter them.

Happy birthday this week to: J.R. Schwonke, Amanda Troisi, Wade Ward, Ron Washburn, Camery Meeks, Evan Moore, Wayne Rich, Mary Kucera, Charles Parrish, Evelyn Young, C.J. Waters, Johnny Johnson and Melissa Grier.
