The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

It is always great to see our community come out and support an event, and our citizens turned out “big time” for the annual Harvest Festival on Halloween last week. The event, sponsored by Main Street Millen, with support from local businesses and other organizations, was held on Cotton Avenue.

There were numerous games and other activities for the kids to enjoy, hot dogs, Cokes and popcorn for purchase, as well as the highlight activity, a costume contest. I am amazed every year at the creativity of the costumes. Back in the day when I “tricked or treated” you went to the dime store, bought a costume in a bag that contained a plastic costume and a mask. That was it! That was your costume, nothing very creative about that.

Today, however, even “bag” costumes are something to see. And, if you really want to impress, you, or your parents, as it is in most cases, make your own costume. Anything goes, from super heroes to cartoon characters to kids sleeping in an aquarium, which was my favorite this year and also a winner!

My grandchildren, like most, carried home from the Harvest Festival bags full of candy and other treats, along with some special memories. “Kudos,” to Main Street Millen and all of the businesses and organizations that supported the event. It was another job well done!
