This Date in 1937!

George Willie Simmons, 20-year-old Jenkins County convict, was killed Friday when he fell under the wheels of a road machine while working near Habersham Church. He left the front machine, presumably to get a match from the driver of the second machine and in trying to climb it, missed it footing. The machine crushed his hip and left side of body. Simmons was serving a 30 year sentence, 20 years for burglary and 10 years for assault.

The District of Columbia Minimum Wage Board has fixed $17 as the lowest weekly wage that can be paid to the 8,000 women employees of retail stores in the capital.

C.P. Wiggins fought his 14th fight in the Millen boxing arena Monday. He and Alex Thompson of Woodcliff went four rounds to a draw. The boys were evenly matched in size and weight and put on a good show and entertainment.

The Men’s Civic Club has completed the personnel for the Board of Directors and Scout officials for the Boy Scout Troop which is to be organized here. The Board of Directors will present scouting to the boys at the Millen High School with M. F. Holman as Scout Master.

A very enthusiastic road meeting was held Wednesday at the City Hall here at which time the matter of putting pressure on getting the Old Louisville Road from Millen to Chatham County on the State Highway System was stressed and appropriate action taken. The meeting was presided over by Walter Harrison.

The Millen Red Raiders ran wild here the last quarter of the football game Friday night , scoring four touchdowns and smashing the Wrightsville High School 53-0.
