Travis Glenn Rhodes

Travis G. Rhodes, 83, of Perkins, Ga. passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 11, 2017, at home after an extended illness. He was born, February 8, 1934, in Jenkins County to the late Edith (Boyd) and Steve Ellis Rhodes.

His early education began at the Old Red Hill School before going on to graduate from Jenkins County High School. He joined the Army to serve his country during the Korean War, while stationed at Fort Mead Army Base in Baltimore, MD. After returning home to Jenkins County he started work at Planters Electric of Millen, GA in 1957 and was a dedicated Serviceman for the company until retirement in 1996.

Travis was a faithful and lifelong member of Ellis Chapel Church. He was a farmer at heart and very happy in the seat of a tractor, plowing both fields of crops and vegetable gardens. Over the years the farm was also home to many cows, pigs, guineas, geese and chickens. His grandchildren fondly remember sharing the seat of a tractor with Papa to give the cows bales of hay. When he wasn’t tilling the soil or feeding animals, he could be found in a tool shed with hammer or screwdriver in hand. If it was broken, he could fix it. He lovingly sharEd his many skills with his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 42 years, Betty (Rabitsch) Rhodes, and his two brothers, Paul Rhodes and Marlin Rhodes.

Travis is survived by his three children: Rhonda Clower of Athens, GA and her husband, Dean; Dennis Rhodes of Perkins, GA and his wife, Lyn; and Dexter Rhodes of Thomson, GA. His sister, Ethel Daughtry of Waynesboro, GA, his six grandchildren: Sarah (Clower) Hailey and her husband, Ridley; Devin Clower; Zachry Rhodes; Ashlee Rhodes; Amelia Rhodes and Lawton Rhodes. His two great grandchildren, Ellis Hailey and Hugh Hailey; his two sisters-in-law, Doris Rhodes and Janice Rhodes, his two nephews, Randy Rhodes and Phil Rhodes; and a niece, Heather Moore.

The funeral service will be held at Ellis Chapel United Methodist Church, 3657 Hiltonia-Perkins Road, Sylvania, GA, on Friday, November 17, 2017, with the Rev. Dr. Karen R. Zeigler officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The children want to express appreciation to their aunt, Ethel Daughtry, for the many years of loving care given to their father. In addition, the family would like to thank the staff at Regency Hospice, especially his nurse, Jill Posey, for her professionalism and friendship.
