The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

Turkey Day is gone, but I bet at least some of the turkey remains in most households around our community!

I do like turkey, but the matter of what to do with the leftovers is always a question in the days following Thanksgiving. I opt for turkey salad and turkey pot pie. After that, it is just turkey sandwiches until it is gone.

This makes me wonder why is it that most of us seldom eat turkey throughout the year, just at Thanksgiving and Christmas. In fact, it is hard to even “find” a turkey in the grocery stores at other times of the year. I know. I’ve tried when I am out of ideas for Sunday dinner. They have “gone missing”!

I have an idea that the non-availability of turkeys at other times of the year is because of the lack of demand. Cooking a turkey takes awhile, like all night, or all day, and most of us refrain from putting that much time in the kitchen – unless it is for a BIG holiday like Thanksgiving and Christmas.

So, turkeys get a “Table Pardon” for the rest of the year. And I am sure they appreciate it. Their cousins, chickens, don’t fare as well, however! Chicken is a southern staple, appearing on most tables weekly, if not more often.

So, I’ll see you once more this year, Mr. Turkey, at Christmas. And, until then, Mr. Chicken, look out!

(If you’re thinking this is a silly column this week. I agree. But, then, buying a turkey that is two times the size I need - just so I will have leftovers – is nothing but silly. Bet, many of you did it, too!)

For your information, there is a trash canister located on the side of The Millen News Building where you can deposit your old newspapers for use by others. The canister is marked “Newspapers Only” and is located on the “side” of the building, not the “front” entrance.

Happy birthday this week to: Victor Sweat, Faye Black, Roy Cheney Sr., and Tammy Troisi.

Happy anniversary this week to: Mr. and Mrs. Don Burke, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Johnson.
