The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

It is hard to believe that yet another year has passed. 2017 will soon become just another page in the history books of time. Time flies – as the saying goes and I agree.

A popular tradition with the approach of the New Year is to make “New Year’s resolutions” – actions will we take or things we will change about ourselves in the coming year. Popular New Year’s resolutions include losing weight, stop smoking, getting more exercise, etc. I stopped this practice long ago because I always found that after only a few days, I was failing in my attempts. I know that I am not alone!

Making major changes in our lives, or even small ones, is probably one of the most difficult things we attempt. We are creatures of habit and our habits are formed in our early years, becoming so comfortable and familiar to us that we seldom even think about them. They have been “programmed” into our personalities and character.

Changes we desire to make in our lives are achieved when we not only recognize the need to do so, but also develop the determination to follow through on those desires. It takes both desire and determination to succeed. I seem to have one but not the other!

So, in the New Year, I will “determine” to follow through on some changes I want to make. I’m not calling this a New Year’s resolution, just a “new start” for a New Year!

Happy New Year to all!
