Urgent Need O Negative Blood shortage

Shepeard Community Blood Center, Augusta, has less than a one-day supply of O Negative blood on hand right now and patients are in need of this rare blood that only 7% of the population has. If you are O negative, this is the only blood type you can receive.

Kevin Belanger, Shepeard’s President/CEO, reports; “Over the years there’s been a steady decline in donors willing to come in on a regular basis and donate blood. People are playing catch up from the holidays and are busy getting back into the swing of their normal routines. Naturally, blood donations are most likely the furthest thing from their minds,” says Belanger. “We know people’s lives are hectic this time of year, but unfortunately, patients don’t have the luxury to wait until the blood comes. This is a life and death matter for many and they must depend on strangers, blood donors, to give this medical necessity.”

O Negative blood is the most needed blood types because anyone can receive it. It is often referred to as the “Universal blood type” and, for this reason, it is the blood transfused during emergencies when there is no time to cross match. “A steady stream of O Negative blood donors is essential to the health of the local blood supply and the patients in our com- munity!” continued Mr. Belanger.

Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and be healthy and well on the day of donation. Please bring a photo I.D. or Shepeard Community Blood Center donor card. We recommend that all potential donors eat a meal and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating blood.
