Remember When – This Date in 1952

The Bethany Home Board of Directors held its regular annual meeting in Vidalia last Thursday at which time three officers were elected: Paul H. Smith, Tampa, FL, President; Elder V.F. Agan, Statesboro, GA, Executive Vice-President; and Alvin L. McLendon Jr., Millen, GA, Vice President.

Walter Harrison of Millen was renamed State Manager of the Georgia Electric Membership Corporation, which is composed of the 41 REA co-ops of the State, at its annual meeting in Atlanta on Friday. The headquarters will remain in Millen. Gov. Talmadge spoke at the annual luncheon. Kermit J. Chance, Manager of the Planters EMC accompanied Mr. Harrison to Atlanta for the meeting.

The time for registering to vote in the Feb. 19th Primary has closed. The Registrar’s office reports that since Dec. 1st, 543 persons have registered in the county – 385 white and 158, colored. In Sheriff’s race, veteran Roy L. Johnson is opposed by B.L. Cowart and Wilmer Taylor.

The Millen Lions Club is sponsoring a square dance Saturday night at the Millen Community House. Music will be provided by the Ogeechee River Valley Boys.

The Pal Theater features a showing of “Tarzan’s Peril”, a big new Tarzan adventure really filmed in Africa. The film stars Lex Barker and Virginia Huston.

Jitney Jungle grocery advertises center cut pork chops for 48 cents lb.; 1 lb. sausage roll for 29 cents; slice bacon for 37 cents lb.; and pork and beans, 10 cents can.

Bank of Millen advertises Statement of Condition reporting $2,789,294.01 in resources.
