The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

I recently heard a commentary on a radio station about the fact that a certain “reality” television show “celebrity” has been advised by her doctor to stop taking selfies due to pain in her hands. What?

Am I to understand that this celebrity has been taking so many “selfies” that her hands hurt? I don’t think I would need medical advice to solve that problem. It’s a no brainer! The celebrity, however, came up with another solution. She now has an “assistant” to help her take selfies! This has to be a joke!

No one who lives in the “real” world goes around taking “selfies” all the time. And no one living in the real world hires an assistant to do it for them. There is nothing “real” about this celebrity’s life! She needs to get a “real” job. Then, she would not have time to take so many “selfies.”

I have to say, however, that this ridiculous incident is not entirely of the celebrity’s own making. She would not be a “celebrity” if not for the following of fans that she has amassed. In other words, the public has made her a “celebrity” by giving its attention to her “selfies” and following her lifestyle on social media. Her sole claim to fame is her lifestyle – nothing more.

I guess I am just too ancient to understand and have too many other things to do. I am just not impressed! I would rather “follow” my grandchildren in the real world and take photographs of them. But I don’t do it so much that my hands hurt!
