The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

My granddaughter, Savannah, 2, recently found a new way to announce her arrival at my house. She ran into the living room, threw her hands up in the air and yelled, “Ta Da, I’m here!” We all had a big laugh!

I am assuming she saw that on kids’ television show somewhere, which has me thinking about how much influence television has on our children (and adults) today. Beginning at a young age, children learn and, like Savannah, mimic a lot of what they see in television shows. And we adults are often influenced by the opinions and actions of those who appear on television. This is why it is so important to monitor what our kids are watching and to give some thought to what we are viewing ourselves.

Influence is a powerful thing. It can change the course of history and the course of our lives. But it cannot work unless we fall under its spell. We need to be certain that the influences to which our children are exposed are in their best interests and having positive effects upon their development. We also need to determine that the ideas and beliefs we entertain are our own and not those of someone trying to influence what we think and do for their own purposes and agendas.

Television is entertaining, but it can also be a powerful ‘influencer’!

Thought for the week – “Today is the tomorrow you were worried about yesterday!”
