Run-off to be held Dec. 2

Early and advance voting in the Dec. 2 General Election Run-off will take place Thursday, Nov. 20, through Wednesday, Nov. 26, at the Jenkins County Courthouse. Ballots may be cast from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday- Friday. Voters may cast their ballots either by mail or in person without providing a reason. Early and Advance voting ends Nov.

Courthouse springs a leak

The Jenkins County Courthouse sustained major water damage on all four floors on the east side of the structure due to a leaking valve in the heating/cooling unit. The damage was discovered when employees arrived for work Monday morning and is believed to have occurred sometime between late Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.

Council of Churches helps provide food to needy families during Thanksgiving

The Jenkins County Council of Churches (JCCC) is continuing a 6-year tradition of providing Thanksgiving meals to needy families in the community. In past years, local churches, organizations and individuals have made contributions of food, money and time to make this event successful.

'Experience Works' for senior adults

Senior adults desiring to reenter the workforce often face numerous obstacles in their quest for employment. Three local citizens, however, have found success with assistance from an area agency. Reba Bennett, Lois Kirkland and Elizabeth Anthony are all training through the Experience Works program.

Christmas decorations contest to be held Dec. 8

The annual Christmas decorations contest, sponsored by the Millen Garden Council, will be held Monday, Dec. 8. Judging will begin at 6 p.m. and continue through 10 p.m. Lights must be on during this time period. Judging will be done from the street or driveway. Ribbons will be awarded to first, second, third and fourth places.

JCHS cross country team finishes season

The Jenkins County High School cross country team finished its season with a third place win at the Region competition for the boys and a fifth place win for the girls. Ten teams competed in the region meet. Participants who finished in the top six at the region meet were eligible to compete individually at the state competition.

JCHS recognizes local veterans with ceremony

Jenkins County High School (JCHS) hosted a Veteran's Appreciation Ceremony in the new gym Tuesday, Nov. 11, to recognize local veterans and all those that have served/are still serving this nation.

O'Connor signs golf scholarship

Gregory Austin O'Connor of Edmond North High School has signed an NCAA letter of intent to attend Kennesaw State University north of Atlanta on a golf scholarship. Gregory is a member of the Edmond North Huskies in Edmond, Oklahoma who have won the Oklahoma State 6-A Championship four years in a row.

JROTC finishes 8th in national championship

The little school that could almost became the little school that would. Saturday, Nov. 8, the Jenkins County High School Army JROTC Raider Team competed in the second annual JROTC "Raider" National Championships held at the Gerald I. Lawhorn Scouting Base (Thunder River Boy Scout Camp), Molena.

STC names presidents', merit list students for summer

Swainsboro Technical College recently announced their president's and merit lists for summer quarter. To be named to the president's list, students must have successfully completed 12 credit hours or more and have earned a quarterly grade point average of 3.60 or better.

Drummer graduates JSU

Marcia Drummer, daughter of Mrs. Sue Moore, recently graduated from Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Ala., with a master's of education in educational leadership. Drummer, a graduate of Jenkins County High School, received a bachelor of science in special education from Morris Brown College.

HeadStart tours fire department

Local citizens are smiling all the way to the gas station as the price of gasoline has fallen to below the $2 per gallon mark at some local stations. Only months ago it reached an all-time high of over $4 per gallon.

Three injured in accident

Millen Better Hometown awarded $2,000 GAP grant

Millen Better Hometown was recently awarded a $2,000 Grassroots Arts Program (GAP) grant for its Community Arts for Children and Adults project. Art Johnson is grant coordinator and will assist Kenton Jenkins, president of the Ogeechee River Artists Association (ORAA), in overseeing the project.

I have long been somewhat disgusted with many of the television shows and their storylines that are now airing. It is just about impossible to find a "family" movie or program worthy of viewing. Even the comedies and cartoons require "parental" supervision.

Rebie Lane Reid, 86, of Millen died Nov. 10

Mrs. Rebie Lane Reid, 86, of Millen passed away Monday, Nov. 10, 2008 at Pepper Hill Nursing Home in Aiken, S.C. after an extended illness. Her funeral was held 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Elam Baptist Church with Dr. Maurice Crowder officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Wilda L. Dickey, 65, of Millen died Nov. 12

Mrs. Wilda L. Dickey, 65, of Millen passed away Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008 at Medical College of Georgia Hospital. Her funeral was held 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at Crowe-Fields Funeral Home with the Revs. Steve Golden and Butch Taylor officiating. Burial was in the Millen Cemetery.
